Hotline to fairer trading this Boxing Day



NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet has announced a dedicated hotline will be available for workers and businesses in the lead up to Boxing Day trading. The hotline will help people understand their rights and responsibilities over this busy retail period.


The hotline is part of a series of actions to be undertaken across NSW, including web-based information sessions and workshops for staff and employers.


There will be two workshops in Newcastle in the lead-up to Boxing Day. Both workshops will be held on 23 November, with the first starting at 9:30am and finishing at 10:30am and the second starting at 11:30am and finishing at 12:30pm.

Key information for Retail Employers

  • All shops in NSW are allowed to trade on Boxing Day
  • Retailers have the right to choose to open, or not, on Boxing Day
  • Retailers cannot coerce, harass, threaten or intimidate employees to work on Boxing Day
  • A landlord cannot force a retail tenant to open on Boxing Day.

Key information for Retail Employees

  • Employees have the right to freely choose to work, or not, on Boxing Day
  • Employees cannot be coerced, harassed, threatened or intimidated to work on Boxing Day
  • Employees can say ‘no’ to working on Boxing Day.


Equitable trading laws have been instituted to protect businesses and employees against coercion.


“The NSW Liberal National Government committed to strong safeguards and assistance to employers and employees when the Retail Trading Amendment (Boxing Day) Bill 2017 passed the NSW Parliament in September”, said Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Mr Scot MacDonald.


Penalties will now apply to retailers that coerce their staff to work on Boxing Day, with fines of up to $11,000 per employee, while penalties of up to $22,000 will be applied to landlords that coerce their tenants to open their shops on Boxing Day.
