What do the White House, the Taj Mahal and the Queen Victoria Building have in common?

They’re all constructed from sandstone!Wollombi sandstone logo

Wollombi Sandstone’s Albert Kraan says it’s a wise choice considering the material’s exceptional building and eco-friendly properties.

“Sandstone is an extremely eco-positive building product; it is an abundant and naturally occurring material that comes in a wide range of colours, properties and qualities,” says Albert.

“Wollombi sandstone is an excellent quality medium to fine grain sandstone with subtle pastel colours and excellent properties.

“It is considered a ‘free stone’, being homogenous and easily worked in all directions thus making it ideal for detailed carving also.”

Albert, a qualified stonemason with more than 25 years in the business, uses Wollobmi’s beautiful sandstone in a range of applications, including:

  • Specialised restoration work on private and State Heritage sites
  • Letter carving and sculptures
  • Cemetery work, both memorial and monumental
  • Supplying the local building tradeWollombi sanstone art

He extends his expertise to providing specialist advice on contemporary quarrying and advanced processing of sandstone.

Anyone who’s tried to lift a block knows it’s pretty heavy stuff, so Albert’s crane truck is also available for hire.

Respectful and reliable service to both small and large customers is at the forefront of Wollombi Sandstone’s mission, as is a stout vision to exploit the benefits of sandstone for our environment according to Albert.

Albert says the Cessnock area has a rich history in commercial sandstone quarrying, and although it has diminished in recent years he thinks with the right support, the industry has great potential.

“Cessnock is surrounded by legendary deposits of sandstones, but many previous commercial quarries have now overgrown and closed down,” Albert says.

“Being close to the Hunter expressway makes the opportunity for growth very attractive.

“I believe Local, State and Federal Governments need to work and collaborate to support initiatives in the development process of manufacturing sandstone as it can supports the economy and the environment very substantially.”
