Business Profile

General Interest

The Singleton Convent is the Motherhouse of the Sisters of Mercy in the Hunter Valley. The 1892 Convent has become known as a beautiful and unique ‘living heritage site’, open for guided tours, concerts, weddings, workshops, room hire and other activities, under the name of ‘Sacred Spaces’.

The convent is set in spacious gardens, creating a unique atmosphere of peace. Gracious buildings date from the mid nineteenth century, and display remarkable architectural beauty. Guided tours tell the story of the Sisters and the convent, while the magnificent Sisters’ Chapel is particularly suited to weddings and concerts.Chapel

The gardens are also available for photos, and rooms and spaces within the building are available for hire.

“The spaces are also ideal for groups wanting quiet times for spiritual activities. Do not underestimate this site. It will surprise and delight you,” says Cynthia Mulholland.

Our venue is a magnificent nineteenth century building.  It is ideal for a variety of functions and events.

The Convent is hosting the inaugural 2016 FibreFest which is being organised by the NSW Knitters Guild. The event is being held on the grounds and of the Convent on Sunday, 9 October 2016.  There will be food, music, workshops, retail outlets and market stalls.  A great day for everyone to enjoy.

The Sisters of Mercy arrived in Singleton in 1875 and quickly established a school and several convents.  In the 1990s the public were invited in and rooms became available to hire.

The Sacred Spaces Fine Music Concert Series was also initiated by the Convent and has become a great success.

“The magnificent Sister’s Chapel was also opened up to the public for wedding ceremonies.  The business has been growing and changing ever since” says Cynthia.

“Cessnock is a thriving and vibrant community and it is a pleasure to work with the Hunter Valley Visitor Centre to promote the Hunter Valley.”
