Sir Edgeworth David Memorial Museum

The Coalfields Heritage Group is the regional history society, who have twice in the past decade taken out the Cessnock City’s Annual Heritage Award, including 2017, for its management of Kurri’s Sir Edgeworth David Memorial Museum, now celebrating its 46th year. The museum building is the 116 year old former Pokolbin school-house on the corner of Deakin & Greta streets, Kurri Kurri.

The museum is one with a difference. It is a history museum and library, containing some 4½ million pages of researched history of 988 Hunter Valley towns, suburbs, settlements and localities. In addition to this history, is that of 933 collieries on its shelves, and over 12,000 photographs in its archives, as well as most Cessnock Advertiser newspapers since 1964 in bound volumes.

Although is is not a Family History library, it caters for this on its shelves, and has more World War One history of the Hunter in its archives.

The museum is located in the grounds of the Kurri Kurri High School, and is freely open to the public and students every Wednesday, Sunday, and most Public Holidays all the year round. It is always available for school and community excursion visits. Contact the Secretary on 4937 4418 or visit www.coalfieldsheritagegroup.org for more information.
