Austrade’s Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) program helps Australian businesses grow their exports in global markets. These grants encourage small to medium enterprises to market and promote their goods and services internationally.

From 1 July 2021 EMDG is operating as a forward-looking grant program, allowing grant recipients to plan their marketing and promotional activities with confidence, because they will know how much they will receive over the life of their grant agreement.
Grants are designed to support eligible exporters at different stages of their export journey:

Tier 1: Ready to export
• First time exporters
• Two years and maximum $40,000 per financial year.

Tier 2: Expanding
• Expanding export promotion activities
• Three years and maximum $80,000 per financial year.

Tier 3: Expanding and strategic shift
• Expanding export promotion activities and making a strategic shift, for example targeting a new market or a new type of customer
• Three years and maximum $150,000 per financial year.

You’re eligible to apply for a grant if:
• your turnover is less than $20 million for the financial year 2020–21
• you are an Australian person (within the meaning of the EMDG Rules)
• you have an Australian Business Number
• you haven’t previously accessed 8 years of EMDG grants.

How to apply
Applications open on 16 August 2021 and close for everyone (including consultants) on 30 November 2021, for eligible expenses incurred for marketing and promotional activities undertaken from 1 July 2021.

What you will need to apply:
• evidence to show you’re eligible
• evidence to show your product is eligible
• your plan to market
• evidence your turnover is less than $20 million

You can still claim reimbursement of eligible expenses incurred up to 30 June 2021 by applying under the final year of the reimbursement scheme. Applications for the reimbursement scheme close 30 November 2021, or 28 February 2022 if you are using a participating EMDG consultant.
