Prepare Your Small Business for Bushfire Season

As summer approaches, the NSW Small Business Commissioner urges business owners to prepare for bushfire risks. Commissioner Chris Lamont emphasizes the need for action: “This summer is predicted to be warm, with over 1,600 bush and grass fires reported since July 1. Even businesses in low-risk areas may face challenges like road closures.”

Bushfires can disrupt businesses in multiple ways:

  • Property Damage: Fires can physically damage buildings, halting operations and causing costly repairs.
  • Operational Disruptions: Brownouts, fallen trees, and loss of communication can hinder daily functions.
  • Supply Chain Issues: Fires may disrupt transport routes, affecting the availability of essential supplies.
  • Employee Safety: Smoke and fire hazards threaten employees’ health, necessitating evacuation protocols.
  • Customer Access: Fires can limit access, reducing foot traffic and sales for local businesses.
  • Insurance Claims: Increased claims during bushfire season can delay financial recovery.

To safeguard against these risks, business owners should create an up-to-date continuity plan, review insurance policies, establish communication channels with employees, and stay informed about fire alerts.
