Locally owned and operated for well over 32 years Wollombi Sandstone is located in the quaint country town of Laguna in the Hunter Valley region.
Sandstone is an extremely eco-positive building product; it is an abundant and naturally occurring material that comes in a wide range of colours, properties and qualities.
Wollombi sandstone is an excellent quality medium to fine grain sandstone with subtle pastel colours and excellent properties.
Did you know sandstone is considered a ‘free stone’, being homogenous and easily worked in all directions thus making it ideal for detailed carving also.
Albert, a qualified stonemason with more than 32 years in the business, uses Wollombi’s beautiful sandstone in a range of applications, including:
- Specialised restoration work on private and State Heritage sites
- Letter carving and sculptures
- Cemetery work, both memorial and monumental
- Supplying the local building trade
The team extend their expertise to providing specialist advice on contemporary quarrying and advanced processing of sandstone.
Anyone who’s tried to lift a block knows it’s pretty heavy stuff, so Albert’s crane truck is also available for hire.
Respectful and reliable service to both small and large customers is at the forefront of Wollombi Sandstone’s mission, as is a stout vision to exploit the benefits of sandstone for our environment according to Albert.
Albert says the Cessnock area has a rich history in commercial sandstone quarrying, and although it has diminished in recent years he thinks with the right support, the industry has great potential.
What you may not know about Wollombi Sandstone is that they have looked after and have extensively been engaged in restoration works on the convict built ‘Old Great North Road’.
They remarkably restored stretches of the famous route using the traditional convict stone pick axe.
The team have also worked on several heritage buildings within the region which resulted in receiving accolades at the Australian Sandstone Architectural Awards for Best Restoration Project of the St Alban’s Church, Muswellbrook.
Albert said “I’m amazed and humbled by having received this award, it’s truly an honour”.
