Business Profile

The owner of Bohemi Boutique is a passionate advocate of buying local and sells only Australian labels.

Jessica Schembri moved from Newcastle to the Cessnock LGA four years ago and says the warmth and encouragement of locals gave her the courage to get into business.

“Once I dove into the Cessnock community, I saw how lovely everyone is and I wanted to be a part of that community,” she said.

Her shop is located at 6/2D Cooper Street in the Cessnock CBD and as the name suggests, features everything boho, chic and modern.

The business opened selling just clothing and has evolved to include jewellery, accessories, shoes and home-wares, all sourced from Australian suppliers.

“I feel there is more guarantee of quality when you buy Australian; I like to meet my suppliers in person and support local,” she says.

And her local approach is paying off, with strong support from fashion lovers across the Hunter.

She has learned from the best, with her mother who has 40 years’ experience running several businesses. While her mum is retiring from retail and now building an accommodation business, Jessica says she herself is only just getting started after 18 months. Her goal is to cater to all ages and sizes and to eventually introduce her own label.

Not someone to shy from hard work, she had to make sacrifices to get Bohemi Boutique to where it’s at – including working another job on the side for the first year.

She sings the praises of her mother, who she says has been her inspiration and her support.

Bohemi Boutique has unfortunately been affected by the current construction works taking place in the CBD and Jessica said she has been trying to be innovative to keep business thriving despite the disruptions.

The store has managed to get its turnover back on track by offering a hugely popular and generous ‘buy one, get one half price’ sale.

“We just need to keep getting the word out,” Jessica says. That includes posting on Facebook and Instagram and reminding the stores’ many repeat clients that the store is still open.

The message is clear: Cessnock CBD is still open for business! Support this small business by stopping by and browsing her beautiful range, you’ll be sure to find something you like!
